Sometimes we just can’t help ourselves and restore an item, even if the restoration obliterates any hope of a profit margin. We don’t do it often, but these riding school crops are an example of just that.
We purchased these crops with broken hand loops and missing end pieces. The sight of them evoked so many fond memories of riding schools in the 50’s-70’s, when helmets had elastic bands instead of a harness, saddles were secured with Balding and 3 fold girths (that has no elastic!), and jodhpurs were poofy, that we were compelled to bring these crops back to working order.
Now, these plastic knot top crops have beautifully rolled & plaited, matching leather hand loops, attached with real leather Spanish knots. The coordinating deerskin popper end loops are secured by hand, using old style cording.
Our whip maker acknowledged that we had committed him to a Labor of Love, but we still had to pay him for his beautiful handiwork. So although the price may seem steep, it reflects what we paid to bring these 2 crops back to life. Hopefully, they will be enjoyed by someone who can equally appreciate the nostalgia. The crops measure 26” long.
