The top side of this Vesta case is decorated with a silver inset depicting a beautifully detailed hound and a hunt whip, within a cartouche. The rest of the case is made of some other white metal, perhaps nickel plate over brass.
The bottom side of the case still contains a card from a Brooklyn, NY business, stating “compliments of Mathias Ziegler.” Mr Ziegler must have given these cases to important customers in much the same way that today’s businesses hand out writing pens decorated with their names & addresses. I certainly would rather have this case than a pen!
The case measures 2 3/4” x 1 1/2” x 1/4”. As the lid still makes a good seal, this case still could be used for matches toothpicks, breath mints, paper clips, stamps or anything else small enough to fit. It could also simply adorn a side table or a desk top of a hunting enthusiast.
