One Antique Hunt Designs specialty is making medallions from precious metal clay, like this bronze fox. It was hand formed using a mold we made of a vintage picture button. It is prong set in a sterling silver ring, size 7.
Precious metal clay consists of finely ground metal particles combined with “clay” which allows the designer to form shapes in the manner of traditional clay. After the green “clay” dries, it is sanded and refined, and then kiln fired. The extreme heat burns off the inert ingredients, leaving only a smaller, but solid metal medallion. Unlike the relatively refined pieces we get when using lost wax casting, medallions made with precious metal clay have an organic look. Many, like this one, resemble ancient coins. Every medallion is individually hand made, finished, fired, polished and hand set, so no two pieces will ever be identical.
