The beautifully executed oil/canvas portrait by renowned horse artist, C. Frederick Sitzler, Jr, which graces the lid of this box, makes it a very special box, indeed. Sitzler (1949-1990) lived in New York and was known for his horse & dog paintings, as well as his landscapes.  During his relatively short career, he was commissioned for portraits of many famous racehorses. Paintings of his have recently sold at auction for between $600-$1200.

The box has a divided interior of wood, (probably for storing playing cards) but can be used on a desk or as a jewelry box. The leather covering on the outside edge of the box is quite worn, giving this box its vintage charm. (Please see photos for exterior condition.) The 4.5"x6" painting is in very good shape and could be removed for framing, if desired. It is signed, "Sitzler" in the bottom, left hand corner (see image for close up view).
